Ace – An ace is a serve that the opponent can’t hit back. It’s a winning serve!

Aggressive – In pickleball, being aggressive means actively attacking your opponents with offensive shots, aiming to dominate the game.

ATP – ATP stands for “around the post” in pickleball. It’s a special shot where you hit the ball under the net’s top and around its post. This shot occurs when a ball is hit with a sharp angle, causing it to go off the court. The receiving player can then chase it down and hit it around the net post to the other side of the court.
Attackable Shot – An attackable shot, especially a dink, is your chance to go on the offensive and potentially win the point. Keep an eye out for these opportunities and be ready to strike!
Attitude – Your attitude matters on the pickleball court. It can influence your partner and even attract new friends. Keep it positive and contagious!
B
Backhand – A backhand in pickleball involves using the back of your paddle or hand to hit the ball. It’s often weaker than the forehand. Targeting your opponent’s backhand can lead to mistakes and points for you.
The Bainbridge Cup – The Bainbridge Cup is an international pickleball tournament pitting Team USA against Team Europe.

Balance – Balance is crucial on the pickleball court, aiding in injury prevention and enhancing shot accuracy and technique.
Banger – A “banger” in pickleball refers to a player who prefers hitting the ball with power rather than finesse. They typically avoid dinking and instead focus on driving the ball aggressively.

Call the Score – Call the Score is what you do before starting each point. Speak clearly and loudly, announcing the complete score before you serve. For example, “0-0-3!”
Callie Smith – Callie Smith is a professional pickleball player and coach from Utah. Transitioning from tennis, she has excelled in pickleball, securing victories such as a gold medal at the 2021 US Open Pickleball Championships.

Carry – A carry in pickleball occurs when a player hits the ball with their paddle in a way that it’s carried along the face rather than struck squarely. Only unintentional carries are allowed; intentional ones result in a fault.

Centerline – The centerline divides the pickleball court in half, extending from the non-volley zone to the baseline. It’s crucial for serves, marking the boundary for the crosscourt service area.
Chainsaw Serve – A chainsaw serve involves using the paddle hand or paddle to add spin to the pickleball during the toss. It was banned in 2022 due to controversy. Now, players can only use their non-paddle hand for the toss, unless they’re unable to use it.
Challenge Court – A challenge court is where players or teams declare their readiness to take on the winners. Winners stay on to face new challengers, while losers rotate off, waiting for another chance to challenge.
Champion – The winner of a pickleball tournament or event!
ChickenWing – A strategic spot to aim your shot at your opponent’s paddle-side shoulder or armpit. It’s difficult for them to return, often resulting in a mishit or an easy opportunity for you or your partner to score.
Chip or Cut Shot (Slice) – A return of serve that puts a lot of backspin on the pickleball. This spin slows down the ball, giving the returning team more time to move forward. It also makes it harder for the serving team to hit a strong third shot.
Christine McGrath – A former collegiate tennis player, is a seasoned pickleball pro with numerous medals, including wins at the USA Pickleball National Championships and US Open Pickleball Championships.
Club – Pickleball clubs, numbering in the hundreds or thousands globally, foster the sport’s culture and maintain its social essence

Court – To play pickleball, you need a court. It can be dedicated or temporary, indoors or outdoors, and marked with paint, tape, or chalk. The standard size is 20 feet by 44 feet, with extra space around the edges for movement
Court Positioning – Positioning on the pickleball court is essential for success. Good positioning helps create angles of attack for you and your partner and limits your opponents’ attack angles
Court Surface – Court Surface – Pickleball can be played indoors or outdoors. Outdoor courts are usually hard surfaces, like tennis courts. Indoor courts can be wood, concrete, or similar hard surfaces. Some players even try clay or grass courts.
Crack – All pickleball players dislike when the ball cracks. Cracks cause the ball to bounce oddly or not bounce at all.
Crosscourt – The diagonal space on the court. Many players aim their shots crosscourt because it is the lowest part of the net and offers a high margin of error. Crosscourt dinks are also harder for opponents to attack

Dead Ball – A dead ball in pickleball is one that’s out of play, meaning it’s no longer active or live.
Deep – To hit the pickleball deep means to aim for the area just inside the baseline on your opponents’ side of the court, keeping them away from the net.
Defense – Defense in pickleball means keeping the ball in play and returning shots to your opponents, aiming to outlast them and win points by making fewer mistakes.
Dekel Bar – Dekel Bar transitioned from a successful tennis career to become a pro pickleball player from Israel. He has won numerous medals across various pro tours and is also a co-owner of Pickleball Getaways, offering pickleball-themed vacations.

Digging Out – Digging Out is when you hit the pickleball too high, giving your opponents a chance to hit a winning shot. You and your partner then try to return their shot and keep the point going.
Dingles or the Dinking Game – A drill to improve your dinks. You and your partner stand at the Non-Volley Zone line and play using only one side. If the ball goes out, the other team gets a point. Play to eleven points. It helps with crosscourt dinks, communication, and strategy.
Dink – A “dink” is a soft shot in pickleball, aimed to drop just over the net into your opponents’ non-volley zone. It’s a strategic move to make the ball difficult to return.
Dinkers – Dinkers are skilled pickleball players known for their proficiency in executing soft shots near the non-volley zone or kitchen line, making it challenging for opponents to return the ball.
Direction – Direction refers to the route or trajectory followed by the pickleball during play.
Disguise – Disguise in pickleball means concealing your intended shot from your opponents by not giving away your intentions too early. Hit the ball in front of your body to keep your shots unpredictable.
Distraction – In pickleball, staying focused is key. Distractions can disrupt your game, so it’s crucial to tune them out and keep your attention on the pickleball.

Double Bounce – A double bounce occurs when the pickleball bounces twice before being returned by one side in regular play, resulting in a fault. In wheelchair pickleball, a double bounce is still in play, while a triple bounce would be considered a dead ball.
Double Hit – A double hit happens when a player strikes the pickleball twice with their paddle before it crosses the net. In pickleball, only unintentional double hits are allowed; intentional ones result in a fault.
Doubles – In pickleball, doubles is the most common format, where each side has two players.
Drills – Drills are essential for improving your pickleball skills. They help you master techniques and develop muscle memory for better performance on the court.
Drive – A drive is a powerful shot aimed at your opponents, similar to a tennis drive. It’s often more effective when hit as a forehand shot, delivering speed and accuracy to keep your opponents on their toes.
Drop Serve – A unique way to start a point. Instead of hitting the ball in the air, you release it from your hand or let it roll off your paddle, then hit it after it bounces on the court. It’s an alternative serving method used to keep your opponent guessing.
Drop Volley – A soft shot made after your opponents hit a drive. It’s aimed to land softly in their side of the non-volley zone, enticing them to move closer to the net. This shot works well if your opponents prefer staying near the baseline and are not comfortable at the net.
Duck – When a pickleball is heading out, “duck” to avoid hitting it, keeping the point alive and your opponents engaged.
DUPR – DUPR, or Dreamland Universal Pickleball Ratings, is the official rating system of the Professional Pickleball Association (PPA). Unlike UTPR, DUPR considers all matches, including recreational play, and factors in the number of points scored in each match. In doubles, DUPR gives more weight to the weaker player’s skill level, as they typically receive more shots. Additionally, DUPR provides a single rating, while UTPR has separate ratings for mixed and gender doubles.

Even (Right) Side – The even (right) side of the pickleball court is where every game begins, with the first serve always starting from this side. If the serving team wins the point, they switch sides with their partner.

Fault – A fault in pickleball ends the rally, usually resulting in a point, loss of serve, or side out for the team that commits it. It can happen due to various reasons like serving or receiving incorrectly or stepping into the non-volley zone.
First Server – The player who serves first at the beginning of a game or after a side out.
Focus – Focus is crucial in pickleball. Losing focus increases the chance of losing the rally, so stay sharp and keep your eye on the ball!
Follow Through – A key in pickleball. It helps you complete your shots effectively and improve their accuracy and placement on the court.
Foot Fault – A foot fault occurs when a player’s foot is positioned incorrectly, such as stepping over the non-volley zone or kitchen line, or crossing the baseline or sideline during the serve.
Footwork – Footwork refers to the movement of your feet on the pickleball court. Good footwork helps you reach the ball effectively and position yourself to make accurate shots.
Forehand – A forehand shot is when you hit the ball with your paddle while your palm is facing the direction you’re hitting. It’s usually stronger for most players than their backhand shot.
Forfeit – A forfeit means a team automatically loses a match because they didn’t follow the rules or code of conduct.
Forward – Moving forward toward the non-volley zone or kitchen line on the pickleball court is crucial. It increases your chances of winning the point.
Fran Myer – Fran Myer was inducted into the Pickleball Hall of Fame in 2018 for her remarkable contributions to the sport. IFP – The International Federation of Pickleball, or IFP, serves as the global authority governing the sport of pickleball.
Illegal Serve – An illegal serve in pickleball occurs when the server violates specific rules regarding how the serve is executed. These rules include hitting the ball below the belly button, having the paddle move upward with the head downward, and keeping the paddle head below the wrist at the point of contact. Additionally, the server must keep at least one foot behind the baseline until after contacting the ball.
Imaginary extension – An imaginary extension refers to where a line on the pickleball court would continue if it were extended. This concept is particularly important during serves, helping players determine their positioning and ensure they comply with the rules.
Indian Wells Tennis Garden – The Indian Wells Tennis Garden is a stunning facility located near Palm Springs, California. It serves as the venue for the USA Pickleball National Championships, hosted by the USA Pickleball Association.
Indoor – Indoor pickleball is played inside, where the ball used is softer and the game tends to be slower. Challenges indoors include poor lighting and blurry lines on the court. Outdoor pickleball, on the other hand, deals with factors like wind and sun glare.
Inside Out – An inside out shot in pickleball is a skilled move where the ball spins sideways as it’s hit. This spin differs from top spin or slice because it’s horizontal, not vertical. It makes the ball curve or hook in the air, adding complexity to the shot.
Inside the Lines and Over the Net – One of the basic rules in pickleball is to keep the ball inside the court lines and over the net, making sure you hit it back one more time than your opponents. It’s a straightforward but essential principle of the game.
IPTPA – The IPTPA, or International Pickleball Teaching Professional Association, is a global organization that certifies pickleball instructors worldwide.

Kill Shot – A finishing move. When your opponents give you a high ball, you use the kill shot to put it away and win the point.
King of the Court – A fun game for pickleball groups. One team or player starts as the “kings” or “queens” and stays on one side of the court. Another team or player challenges them for one point or more. If the challengers win, they become the new kings/queens, and the old ones join the line of challengers.
Kitchen – The Non-Volley Zone, or Kitchen, is a special area on the pickleball court that’s crucial to gameplay. It’s a 14-foot space near the net, extending 7 feet on either side. Players can’t hit the ball in the air while inside this zone; they have to let it bounce first.

Lefty – If you’re playing pickleball against someone who’s left-handed, it’s important to note that their shots will be different from those of right-handed players. Lefties have opposite forehands and backhands compared to righties, so it’s crucial to adjust your strategy accordingly. Typically, you’ll want to target their backhand, as that’s often considered a weaker shot for left-handed players.
Leigh Waters – A top-tier pro pickleball player, securing consecutive national championships in 2019 and 2021 (with no event in 2020 due to COVID). Let – A let is a rally in pickleball where the outcome isn’t counted as a point.
“Let’sGo” – Let’s go! is something you or your partner might shout when you’re feeling pumped up on the pickleball courts.
Level – A level in pickleball refers to your skill rating, which ranges from 1.0 to 6.0, with 6.0 being the highest for top pro players.
Line – Lines mark the boundaries of a pickleball court, including the baseline, sidelines, centerline, and Non-Volley Zone or Kitchen Line.
Line Call – When a player or line judge signals whether the pickleball is “in” or “out” of play, indicating if it landed inside the court or outside the lines.
Line Judge – A referee in pickleball who decides if the pickleball landed in or out on the sidelines and baseline. In tournaments, especially in important matches, there may be multiple line judges for accuracy.
Linked – Staying linked with your partner in pickleball means moving together in sync on the court. If you’re not linked and move independently, you could leave open spaces for your opponents to exploit.
Live Ball – The pickleball in play from when the score is called until a fault or dead ball is called.
Lob – When you hit the ball with some height, sending it high into the air.
