Our purpose in detailing our ranking methodology is to provide transparency and help users understand exactly how we evaluate paddles.
By merging data-driven analysis with real user experiences, we offer a balanced and comprehensive approach that ensures our rankings are both accurate and reliable.
I. Data Collection
Our Paddle Pickler’s team collect paddle measurements from a variety of reputable sources, including teaching books, online classes, and YouTube videos, in addition to direct measurements by our team. This multi-channel approach ensures a comprehensive dataset for accurate and reliable information.
Check our Data Sources for more information.
II. Paddle Classification
We know that players have unique playing styles and preferences. To help players find the perfect paddle for their game, we categorize paddles into distinct types based on their performance attributes.
- Performances: Paddles are categorized into Control, All-Court, and Power types based on their performance attributes, catering to different playing styles.
- Material: There are the common materials used in paddle construction such as graphite, composite, polymer, wood, aluminum,… The choice of material significantly affects a paddle’s performance characteristics, such as control, power, and durability.
- Weight: Paddle weight is measured and provided, considering its impact on player maneuverability and power generation. There are some common types such as light weight, standard weight and last is heavy weight.
- Shape: We outline the various paddle shapes, including Elongated, Standard, and Hybrid,… and their respective advantages and disadvantages for players.
- Level: We use 3 levels: Beginner, Intermediate, Advanced. All paddles are classified based on the skill level they are best suited for, helping players select equipment that matches their experience and abilities.
- Pricing: There are three price ranges: Budget, Mid-range, and Premium, ensuring players can find a paddle that fits their budget while still meeting their performance needs.
III. Performance Metrics
Swing weight – Swing weight is a measure of a paddle’s resistance to swinging about the end of the handle. A higher swing weight indicates a paddle that feels heavier in the hand, potentially offering more power but requiring more effort to maneuver. Conversely, a lower swing weight suggests a lighter-feeling paddle that may sacrifice some power but offers greater maneuverability.
Twist weight – Twist weight measures a paddle’s resistance to rotating on off-center hits, affecting forgiveness and the size of the sweet spot. A higher twist weight typically results in a paddle with a larger sweet spot and more forgiving performance on mishits.
Balance Point – The balance point of a paddle refers to the point where the paddle’s weight is evenly distributed. Paddles with a higher balance point tend to offer better stability and carry-through on shots, while those with a lower balance point are often easier to maneuver but may sacrifice some power.
Spin Rating – Spin rating categorizes paddles based on their spin potential, helping players identify paddles suited to their playing style and skill level. Paddles with higher spin ratings are capable of generating more spin on shots, allowing for greater control and precision on the court.
Power and Pop – Our evaluation includes measurements of the power and pop levels of paddles, providing MPH readings to gauge hitting strength and ball responsiveness. A higher power rating indicates a paddle that can generate more speed and power on shots, while pop measurements reflect the paddle’s ability to deliver quick, responsive returns.
IV. How We Testing
On-hand Testing
Our team has rigorously tested over 200 paddles in many pickleball brands (from Tier S such as Joola, Selkirk, CRBN to Tier C likes Vulcan, Gamma, Adidas,…), drawing on our 7+ years of experience to provide comprehensive insights that save players time and effort. We do tests weekly to ensure we have the latest information and technology updates for pickleball paddles.
Instead of spending hours testing each paddle, players can rely on our detailed reviews, which cover the feel, features, and pros and cons of each paddle, allowing for swift, informed decisions.
Our testing process is thorough and unbiased. Here are some key factor for our testing process and some specific tool to ensure that thorough and precise.
- Paddle weight
- Balance
- Spin
- Power
- Control
- Forgiveness
- Core materials
- Performance of surface texture
- Grip size and its comfort
- Durability
We aim to provide reliable data on which paddles perform best under various conditions and make a clear picture of how each paddle performs in various aspects of the game to find the best for each reader.

Testing Process
Our testing process is designed to be thorough and influential.
We start with precise measurements using the AWS Series Digital Pocket Weight Scale for weight and the Mitutoyo Digital Caliper for dimensions. Next, performance attributes are evaluate by Fermin: the Briffidi SW1 Machine captures swing and twist weight, while the Stalker Pro S3 Radar Gun measures power, pop, and spin. Vibration dampening is analyzed using the Fluke 805 Vibration Meter.
For material properties, we use the TA Instruments Q800 Dynamic Mechanical Analyzer, and durability is tested with Instron Universal Testing Systems. Grip size is checked with the Gamma Sports Racquet Grip Gauge to ensure comfort. Additionally, Sid, Fermin and Jim conduct a Repetitive Impact Analysis by hitting the ball 100 times with each paddle, recording and reviewing the session to assess performance consistency and durability.
Our testing process, combined with our long experience and detailed discussions, allows us to determine which paddles are best suited for various needs. We categorize paddles based on performance attributes, materials, weight, shapes, prices and levels . This ensures players can find the perfect paddle tailored to their specific playing style and preferences.
V. Overall Rating
After Paddle Pickler’s testing process and evaluation, each paddle is awarded a score that encapsulates its overall performance and suitability for different types of players.
